USB Audio Class

USB Audio Class is a standard USB device category, similar in concept to HID for input devices, that defines how audio hardware such as headsets, external sound cards and audio interfaces should communicate with a computer. Because it follows a well defined standard, most operating systems support it natively.

This is why many USB headsets, microphones and simple audio interfaces work immediately when plugged in, without needing to install manufacturer software first, unlike more specialised or professional audio equipment that may still rely on dedicated drivers for advanced features such as very low latency or many simultaneous channels.

USB Audio Class devices commonly include external DACs, USB microphones and simple audio interfaces used for calls, music listening or basic recording. See our guide to USB audio for more on how these devices work together.
