Extended Power Range, abbreviated EPR, is an addition to USB Power Delivery introduced with PD 3.1. It extends the maximum power a USB-C connection can deliver from 100 W, the previous Standard Power Range ceiling, up to 240 W at 48 V.
EPR is intended for demanding devices such as high performance laptops, docking stations powering multiple screens, and some monitors that also charge a connected laptop. Reaching these higher power levels needs an EPR capable charger, an EPR capable device, and a cable built for the higher voltage and current, since a cable that is only rated for lower power will not allow the full charging speed.
EPR chargers and cables are usually labelled with their maximum wattage, which is the simplest way to check compatibility before buying. See our Power Delivery guide for how EPR fits alongside standard PD charging.
